When a past band break-up threatened to derail Clara Salyer, she decided it was time for a change. That’s when she traded in her Softies records for Sebadoh and began trading in heavier, scrappier guitar fuzz with Prissy Clerks. After teaming up with Howard Hamilton, Dylan Ritchie, Tim Leick and Emily Lazear, Salyer began pouring over the songs that would become Prissy Clerks’ debut album, Bruise or Be Bruised. Over 11 tracks – co-produced by Brent Sigmeth and Ali Jafaar – the band rips through tightly wound pop songs that bring the listeners into Salyer’s fragile self-conscious. It’s a reverb-heavy, emotional journey that flashes between dark isolation and uncharted, hopeful beginning. Forged Artifacts is excited to deliver Bruise or Be Bruised on 12″ cyan blue vinyl.

The Melismatics formed at the turn of the century in the fertile ground of the Minneapolis indie-rock scene. Their debut album “Postmodern Rock” quickly caught the attention of college radio stations around the country and garnered favorable reviews from critics around the world. Shortly thereafter, Minneapolis indie-rock king pin Ed Ackerson (Motion City Sountrack, The Replacements, The Jayhawks) signed the band to Susstones Records and produced their next two albums “New Infection” and “Turn It On”. The Melismatics toured the country numerous times over and continued to win loyal fans with their high-energy and unpredictable live shows. Their music has been featured on MTV’s “The Hills,” “The City”and “Laguna Beach,” NBC’s “Windfall”; Animal Planet’s “Jockeys” and they’ve played such notable events as Lollapalooza, Summerfest, and CMJ. The Melismatics released “The Acid Test” on CC Entertainment/E1 Music (2008). Renowned producer John Fields caught the band performing at 2007 SXSW in Austin, Texas and signed on to produce the album. The music video for “Digging Deep” charted at #2 on MTVU and received widespread airplay.

The Melismatics’ new album “MANIA!” was produced by Jon Auer of The Posies and Big Star, along with Ed Ackerson (Motion City Soundtrack, Golden Smog, The Replacements) and was mixed by John Fields (Jimmy Eat World, Rooney, Har Mar Superstar, etc). The LP was mastered at Sterling Sound in NYC by Chris Athens (Coldplay, Beastie Boys, NERD, etc) and features collaborations with Dan Wilson (Adele, Semisonic) and Jon Auer who also lends vocals to several tracks.

In August 2011, Conchance(rapper) and Haunted Gauntlet(producer) got back together and Conny started writing and rapping on the more hip hop/vintage side of Haunted Gauntlet music/beats. That was the beginning of Mean Street in essence despite the fact that they had be collaborating musically since 2007 starting out of Hotel Frank (3821 Farnam St. Omaha, NE). Read a book.

They recorded “Nite Owl” and “Fly me to the Moon” and have since put together a large collection of tracks and instrumentals that will likely include 19 tracks together that will make up the full length album “Mutants of Omaha” due to be release Summer 2013. We picked up DJ Really Real to add turntables to top off the album and to join up live on stage. Thier first show was March 22 at the Slowdown in Omaha opening for UUVVWWZ, Simon Joyner & No, I’m the Pilot in benefit for the Community Bike Shop in Gifford Park. Mean Street is set to play many shows this Spring/Summer and to release the debut album “Mutants of Omaha” digitally and on vinyl. More to this story to be written, to be continued …

Sleepy Kitty began as an experimental sound project for a class when frontwoman Paige Brubeck was enrolled as an undergraduate at School of The Art Institute Chicago in 2007. Brubeck and Evan Sult (ex-Harvey Danger) began layering field recordings of the “L” and Wicker Park street poets with ’60s style harmonies and crashing drums. Sult was playing drums in the math-rock indie-pop band Bound Stems at the time, and Brubeck was playing guitar in the girl group trio Stiletto Attack, but as the two bonded over Pavement and The Fall, they began writing their own post-punk, show-tune inflected songs and Sleepy Kitty went from side project to full on band.

Now two self-released EPs and a full length album later, “the duo plays up the ’90s rock while still keeping it fresh.” (Paste Magazine) Their live show is a whirlwind: Brubeck loops her vocals live, crafting walls of girl-group harmonies above the tube-driven blast of her vintage Super Reverb. Sult plays at the edge of the stage with her—when he can contain himself to his drum throne. Their 2011 album Infinity City (Euclid Records) transmits the power of their live show but reveals their canny control of pop architecture: “Gimme a Chantz!” opens with a theatrical flourish before bounding into a crowd of surging ’90s-era harmonies, and the Velvets/Fab Four mash note “Seventeen” revels in their influences. On their forthcoming release (as yet untitled) the band stays true to their love of dirty guitars, dreamy vocals and city sounds, and the songs progress like a collection of short stories. “Don’t You Start” is a pop kiss-off, thick with spring reverb and vocal loops, “Godard Protagonist Inflection” channels the soft coo of Brigitte Bardot, while rumbling percussion and blistering guitars create a dark cinematic crescendo. Choir-like voices sing in wonder of a cryptozoologist’s dedication to a search in “What Are You Gonna Do (When You Find Bigfoot)” and a ’60s teenage dance party shows up with the France Gall inspired “Nothing Equals You.” In support of Infinity City, Sleepy Kitty toured the Midwest and East Coast as well as opening for Neon Trees, Dresden Dolls, Deerhoof, and the inimitable Chuck Berry in their current hometown of St. Louis. A bang-up show in April 2012 at KC’s Middle of the Map Festival (which featured bands like fun., Mates of State and Neon Indian) kicked off their summer early, so Sleepy Kitty is headed out for regional and East Coast dates to warm up their new album. They’ll return home in August to hit the stage at LouFest along with The Flaming Lips, Dinosaur Jr. and Cults.  While at home, Sleepy Kitty runs a screenprinting studio out of a 19th century warehouse where they specialize in handprinted show posters for bands and venues in St. Louis, Chicago and New York.

T O R C H E S are a rock outfit that have been hypnotizing and swooning the Los Angeles scene. Their sound is comprised of lush guitars, vocal harmonies and tribal drums. Singer, Azad Cheikosman and drummer, Eric Fabbro formed this band after years of bashing away in a hot and sweaty garage, only to grow tired of playing covers. The band previously consisted of five, but went down to a more cohesive number of three members. In fact, former bassist, Bridgette Moody learned how to play bass the same week that the band was set to play a show in Los Angeles back in 2010. Although she has left the band, Azad and Eric continue their journey, new bass player and all.

Their music has been aired on KROQ, KCRW, KPFK, KXLU and many stations all across the U.S. They have also been featured in BBC, LA Times, Filter Magazine, RCRD LBL, Buzz Bands LA etc. The band has played mostly every nook and cranny in packed L.A. venues and have shared the stage with bands such as Sea Wolf, Andrew W.K., Atlas Genius and other great acts. They’ve toured throughout the US and played at SXSW and CMJ 2012. Torches have been fortunate enough to work with Local Natives‘ producer, Raymond Richards, David Newton (The Soft Pack, The Henry Clay People, Happy Hollows) and Jeff Lipton who has mastered records for some of today’s most intriguing artists (Arcade Fire, Wilco, Andrew Bird). This trio is excited to put out records, pet as many animals as humanly possible, see the world, meet weird looking people, share experiences and much more.

If you’ve seen Annalibera play as a two-piece folk band, then you know that their music is tight, their songs are lucid, and singer Anna Gebhardt and guitarist Ryan Stier have serious chops. But you won’t be prepared for how hard they can rock. In the past few months the band has dramatically expanded their sound, adding the always-reliable Phil Young and Chris Marshall of the local powerhouse Tires into their lineup. The result is an arresting New Wave sound that perfectly blends guitars, drums, and synths into a strong and driving pop explosion. But within the rocking new arrangements, you’ll still hear their folk roots in the quality of the songwriting and lyricism and in their mastery of song form.

The band recently recorded a new album, slated for release later this year, and they plan to tour with it.

Har-di-Har, a multi-instrumentalist, trans-genre acoustic duo, consists of life-long performers and partners Julie and Andrew Thoreen. Midwesterners each, these Iowa natives are poised at a crossroads of American sound, geographically and historically. The deft pair is at equal ease with elder sounds like Simon and Garfunkel, Joni Mitchell and Leo Kottke as they are with contemporaries Grizzly Bear, Dirty Projectors, Sufjan Stevens, and Beach House. Further, their love of dance music combines to create a sum that has been called “D&V”–as the sound is largely driven by drums and vocal harmonies, and reverses the groove as impetus for tonal painting.

Best is the fact that they accomplish this feat with only two performers, and without the need of loops, samples or programming. Functioning each as rhythm players (guitar, bass keyboard and drums), the pair doubles on both lead and harmonic vocals, and supplements the sound with a variety of tastefully peculiar orchestrations. Andrew handles bass drum, trombone, and guitar/bass, while Julie covers snare, toms, cymbals, and keyboards.

Their sound inhabits that perfect balance where a melodic line enters emotional space, as though Miles Davis were performing Gregorian chant. Julie’s richly mellifluous rasp calms the experimental ambition of the group to an emotionally cogent sincerity. The result is a familial, yet strangely enchanting, heart-strung wonderment that seems a portrait (as much as an expression) of the obviously-compassionate pair.

MaryBeth is a Midwest/NYC based musician. Much of her life has been spent moving from town to town. During the early years, her family van soundtrack ranged from ’70s Rock & Roll/Americana to Motown/Stacks crooners. Songs about love and the road. LIFE’S SIMPLE THINGS.

At college in DC, MB sang in an A Capella group, with a spoken word hip-hop troop and a Jazz band. In her final year, she co-founded the band “Milly Beau,” named after her New Orleanian French-American grandmother. The soul pop project spent four years in DC & NYC, during which MaryBeth was featured in Glamour Magazine, Italian Vogue, Blackbook and NBC’s Jimmy Lloyd Singer-Songwriter Showcase for her “sultry sound.”

In 2012 MaryBeth began a solo project. She is currently working with Kieran Kelly (Angus & Julia Stone) on a debut EP. Drawing from the soundtrack of the cross-country travels, she likes to keep the sounds vintage easy, like the Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty & Aretha. She is also inspired by the sounds from many of today’s young artists such as Adel, Bruno Mars and the Killers. But most importantly, she is constantly floored and moved by her many many talented musician friends.

“The sound is spiritual, it comes from the people that make it happen.” -Smokey Robinson
